Mental Health Support in the Workplace and Community
This course covers how to support individuals experiencing mental health concerns and those in crisis. It teaches practical skills to recognise signs of distress, provide immediate psychological first aid, and make safe referrals to appropriate services. Participants will learn:
How to identify indicators of common mental health problems and crisis states
Effective communication techniques for calming and engaging with distressed individuals
Risk assessment for suicide, self-harm, and harm to others, and how to respond appropriately
Safety planning and strategies to reduce immediate risk
Legal, ethical and duty-of-care considerations, including privacy and consent
How to connect people with crisis and ongoing support services, including emergency and community resources
Self-care and team debriefing practices to manage responder stress and burnout
The course uses a mix of interactive teaching, scenario-based exercises and practical role-plays to build confidence and competence. Suitable for community workers, first responders, carers, workplace staff and anyone who supports people at risk. Completion provides a structured, evidence-informed foundation for assisting people through mental health crises and ensuring safe onward care.
By the end of this course, the students will be able to:
